Aarron Bros 1 Cent sale starts Dec. 26th
I got an ad in the mail today from Aarron Bros plugging that they are starting their ususal buy-one-frame-get-the-next-one-for-1-cent sale the day after Christmas. They are extending the same deal to canvases as well. AB jacks up the prices on their frames pretty high to begin with, but still it's worth checking out if you have some stuff to frame. It's the canvas deal that is making me think it's worth a trip. I assume it's happening at most of their stores.
As a side note, one part of the ad says "buy/get any artist for a penny stock up and save!" It looks like it meant to say Artist Canvas... some kind of typo... or they are selling artists, too. If so, I wonder how they determine the "equal or lesser value" of one artist over another.

Brush pen goodness....
A couple of people have asked me where to get the "brush" pens I've used at the last couple of tag sessions, so I'm sharing it here. Be warned though, they are more of a rubber-tip pen as there are no individual bristles.
I've been getting them from kinokuniya, the store inside of the big Uwajimaya store in the international district. There, they are about $5:50 a pop (Link Here).
Buuuut, I just found out, you can order them online (oh snap!!!) for $4.50 (although with shipping you might not be saving anything) (Link Here).
I'll bring a couple of them with me next time in case anyone wants to try them out before committing, but for my taste, these pens have a great feel.

Woodcut Saves the Day!
This is a drawing that I was doing on the bus on the way to work and I wasn't very happy with the result. I added in the faux woodcut detail and then I liked it a lot better. I'm still not very happy with the placement of his hand on his hip, but I didn't do a pencil sketch first... just jumped in with the ink.

Well, it was my first TAG North and just wanted to share with anyone thinking of showing up. That it was pretty cool and not only do we chat it up and sketch. But, we take pictures of our selves! And it’s all great fun!

Comic Con founder passes
Shel Dorf, the founder of the San Diego Comic Con and original TAG member passed away a few days ago. Here is a news report about him:
KFMB-TV - "Remembering Man Who Started Comic-Con"
Pig Face Pete
"You're gonna buy this glider rocker, see?"
So last night we had randomly generated "inspiration" topics to choose from, and I went with "Sojourn Amish Crime Boss." This is what I came up with:
As Rick pointed out, there's probably more Hasidic Jew than Amish in this dude - and maybe even be a little Lee Van Cleef - but since he's holding a knife I'm not going to say anything about it.
Our man Brett Bean was at TAG last night! He told us about the "two-animal mash-up" game he plays whenever he's stuck for an idea on what to draw, and then showed us the sketch for his excellently abombinable Great White Gark. It inspired me, but the version I drew last night was poop. I took another shot at it this morning:
What's that you say? It looks like I put a giraffe and a shark into the transporter from the 1986 re-make of "The Fly" starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis? Why, thank you! Thank you very much!

More Brushes on the bus
Here's another image I've made on the ride to and from work with Brushes. I've got Sketchbook now, too, but I haven't done anything interesting with it yet. It's sort of clunky compared to the immediacy of Brushes. However, it does have more brushes and other features, so I will spend some more time with it.

Return of the Hippo
Sept. Newbie
My name is Mark Honschke and I am a newbie to the TAG group. I have worked as a sculptor and model-maker for the last ten years and as a consequence my 2D skills have fallen to the wayside. I am inspired by the talent of the group hope to learn from its members to re-learn what I have lost. The above images are the civilian amphibious vehicle with flippers and a redesign of a my toy company mascot. Thanks again to Rich and Rick for the invite and see you in Oct.
